✧PREMISE

「It all began in the town of Qing Qing, China with news of the birth of a mysterious “luminescent” baby! Shortly thereafter, similar phenomena popped up all over the world. The trigger for these newfound powers was never determined, but as time progressed, what was once extraordinary became ordinary… and “Dreams” became reality!!

Of the Planet’s population, around 80% have developed unique abilities, or “Individualities”—called “quirks”! We have entered a new age—A society of superhumans! And in this world whirling in chaos, a certain profession that people used to aspire to only in daydreams has stepped into the light of day!

The great phenomenon was attended by an accompanying increase in crime levels, and while nations dawdled in making any sort of radical change to the law, men and women of courage took inspiration from comics and donned the mantle of heroism! They began policing this brave new world, and defending innocents from evil! Suddenly, through the swell of public opinion, heroism gained rights as an official occupation, and due to their various acts of meritorious service, they obtained income from the state and renown from the people!!」
—Chapter 01, My Hero Academia

Grow, learn, or find your own justice—what is a hero to you? Or do you scorn the very title? Will you support from the wings, or rise to the top? Where do you stand in this Wild West of Individuality?

Take on missions or pave your own way— rise!
And make a name for yourself!!

✧RULES

Respect
It should go without saying, but on the side of caution, please remember that IC ≠ OOC. We will not tolerate harassment and after a proper investigation, offenders will be warned/banned. Depending on the nature of the offense, we may issue a warning, but we reserve the right to ban you without it as well. However we intend to conduct full investigations and discuss this with all parties before action is taken.
We take these things seriously as we’re all here to have a good time. Just don’t be a dick.

Literacy
ESL and special need players will have leniency for this rule, but we ask that you do your best to write tags that are comprehensive to your fellow players. Sometimes we like to mess around and gag tag, and that’s okay! But if someone asks you not to, please be considerate.

IC
While this is an AU setting, we ask that you do your best to still keep any non-OC characters as IC as possible in the context of the world.

God-moding and Info-Moding
The nature of this game does allow for characters to potentially have the ability to know more than ICly possible, but if your character does have a quirk of this variety, we request you submit a permissions post and will advise you whether or not that is a requirement upon acceptance of your application.

Age Requirement & TOS Adherence

All players must be at least seventeen years of age and act in compliance with Dreamwidth's Terms of Service.

Sexually Explicit and/or Violent Material
As all players must be seventeen or older, we will allow these contents provided warnings are applied and it goes under a cut tag. Please refer to rule one, respect, if a player comes to you with discomfort about where a thread is going. Any insistence or harassment will be dealt with accordingly.

Taken/Reserves
We have a character limit of 4 per player, so that being said, please do not reserve more than two characters at a time. We will not accept multiple versions of a character (i.e. Link from Skyward Sword vs Windwaker Link) UNLESS you can create a detailed enough AU to thoroughly differentiate from the other version. This will be on a first come, first serve basis. Also we request you do not monopolize a single canon and allow others a chance to reserve and play those characters. We have the right to decline a second reserve from the same person trying to play from the same canon, but it doesn't mean we necessarily will.

Tag your posts
You have tags assigned in the community tag list, so please utilize them. It not only helps us keep things organized, but it’ll help you with your activity check.

Activity
Activity will be on a check-in basis, linking activity that takes place within the AC month. In other words, if it is January, and you make one comment within January on a thread that started in December, we will accept that as activity. The aim is to enjoy yourself - not feel like the game is a homework assignment due every four weeks.

If you forget to check-in, you'll take a strike. If you don't reply to the notification post, your character will be removed from the game and considered inactive. The goal is to avoid squatting while making it a fairly forgiving system.

✧ FAQ

[ MECHANICS ]

What communities do we use for posts?

The main community is going to be [community profile] plus_ultra and will be used for logs and network posts. [community profile] lowkeyultra will be the OOC community where you'll see announcements and player chatter and such. [community profile] abunchofquirks is the meme community for all your dumb fun needs.

What's the current IRL:Game Day ratio

1:1

What's the network?

While quirks have allowed technology to advance faster than ever, people still use many of the same avenues of communication we do now. Play it like a super popular message board like 2chan. Use personal character inboxes for texting purposes.

Can you explain ‘missions’?

Many questions about how to read the missions chart can be located on the first sheet labeled as ‘FAQ’, but we recently added this mechanic to encourage activity and ideas for players to explore of their own accord, without the explicit label of the activity being noted as “hero” or “villain” movement. This’ll allow you to explore the grey areas a little more and in the end, you can determine once it all plays out what you would take the points for (either Rank or Notoriety).

Can I decline the points?

You can, but we discourage it. If a villain does something over-the-top and makes a big scene, it’s hard to argue their notoriety in general will be low. They’re going to be looked at as a ‘Most Wanted’ regardless, so there’s no real benefit to declining it. Many Notoriety options will have a “0” option anyway.
For Heroes, it makes more sense for them to generally try to stay out of the public eye and ask not to be reported (i.e. Aizawa’s quirk is beneficial if people don’t know about him and his skills), however in some cases, a name or rumor is unavoidable if they act as heroes in the public eye.

[ QUIRKS ]

Does my character have to have a quirk?

Absolutely not! In fact, 20% of the world's population is lacking in one, so if you want to play the quirkless character, you're welcomed to it. But bear in mind that characters are not being transplanted from their original worlds and still require an AU background.

You are also welcomed to play a character that has a quirk and is hiding it. Since some quirks don't always manifest in obvious ways, it's easy enough to say your character has hid it if you like.

What if my character has an ability in canon?

Build upon it! You don't have to get rid of it entirely, but we want to encourage expanding on its weaknesses and physical limitations. For example, a character can create explosions, but after awhile, their hands start to sustain a lot of damage and it becomes painful to execute.

Are there quirk-type limitations?

Besides what we ask of you on an individual level, we’re noticing from the workshops that a lot of quirks are incredibly similar in style, so if we start to notice that those quirks are coming in after a good handful have already been apped in, we are likely going to decline it. Elemental quirks are especially prone to being very same-y, so if you want to wield fire, please make it a creative method for doing so.

It is worth noting that elemental quirks are not very common in this world, but they aren’t out of the question.

My character needs a weapon/tool/costume piece for their quirk!

A lot of quirks do! Some quirks cannot be controlled absolutely (i.e. Kaminari Denki cannot just shoot someone with his electricity. He needs a tool to help guide it, and even then it requires precise placement.), but don’t fret! That is what the Support businesses are for! They create gadgets and other objects that help optimize quirks, or just make life easier and more convenient for those that have problematic mutations and so on. If they require a weapon, include it in their quirk profile.

[ CHARACTERS ]

Do you accept original characters (OCs)?

Sure do! And before you ask, the apps are treated the same, too.

Will there be a cast/ game cap?

None currently planned.

My character isn’t actually human!

For AU purposes, your character will now be a mutant. Hooray! All substances of their form are of this world, no matter how bizarre it seems, but that’s the fun part of the mutation quirk anyway! Just understand that everything can essentially be scientifically explained in some fashion or another, which is what allows us and other players’ characters to be able to determine a weakness, too. They’re welcome to bluff, though, but know most people aren’t going to buy it.

My character is a minor character.

Don’t sweat it. We accept OCs, so walking headcanons aren’t out of the question, either, but for the sake of other players in your canon, try to keep it as accurate as possible. (As accurate as you can be in an AU setting, anyway.)

I want to play a villain, but it's difficult to cause trouble as it becomes obvious OOCly.

And we totally get that. Our solution would be to place a request to run a player plot. It doesn't have to be big, but if your villain-type badass wants to start some fires or cause some weird earthquakes, the mods will have you covered! Once the idea is approved or reviewed/expanded upon in discussion, a mod can write up a post, run it by the player, then post it for people to react to. This way you don't ever have to reveal your motives and can ICly operate as a villain would.

What should I do if I want to app someone from the My Hero Academia series?

Unfortunately we will be declining apps from the canon series to avoid confusion in terms of timelines/canon points - especially with a series that is ongoing and only three or so years in. The other idea behind this move is to allow non-canon characters to flourish in this setting without the canon cast overwhelming it.

What if I want to app an AU version of an MHA character?

These will be declined as well.

What do we do if we pick up someone that was apped previously?

To make it less confusing for previous CR, there’s a rather weird situation happening in the area. People have been known to suddenly up and vanish and seem to return with little to no memories and completely different quirks—or no quirks at all.
It’s an epidemic that seems to take its roots in a villainous organization, but heroes and the police force alike are stumped as to narrowing down the source beyond a few thugs carrying quirk-cancelling bullets around. The effect is temporary in most cases, but some people are returning as completely new entities.
The other option is to pick up where someone previously left off. Same AU, with a history of CR. It’s a little more complicated but we won’t deny the option if the player is insistent.
That being said, dropped characters are fair game. Someone can pick up/reserve a dropped Non-OC character immediately if apps are open at that time. You relinquish your play rights to that character in PLUS ULTRA! if you submit the drop form unless you reach out to a mod right away to withdraw the drop.
Unless the creator of said OC is cool with you playing them. Then... by all means.

What if my question isn't answered here?

Then ask below in the comments!

QUIRKS

Individualities, or "quirks", are unique to each person! These quirks can be inherited or an outlier from the family, but they tend to fall into three categories, as seen below.
EMISSION/ACTIVATION As the name might suggest, these quirks require a conscious effort to engage, asking the user to trigger their abilities of their own accord. These quirks may not necessarily be just the snap of a finger to get it going, but can often ask the user to exert extensive effort just to make the quirk function at its maximum, most efficient capacity. This quirk type can operate at various ranges depending on its properties, but while at times emission users have adjusted to their ability, excess use in a short period of time can adversely affect the user as well. If the quirk requires outside sources for utilization—for example materials, objects, or even people the user can affect—this determines that the Emission-type quirk provides a wider variety that can possibly exist. This is the most common quirk type in society, by far.
TRANSFORMATION This quirk is best described as a hybrid between Emitters and Mutants, with a very rare likelihood their abilities can affect other materials, objects, or people. This quirk allows the user to essentially transform their bodies, whether to enhance existing features or add new ones, but often restricts them to close-range combat as most affect the user exclusively. Much like the emission-type quirk, excess use can lead to adverse effects against the user, causing these abilities to be mainly temporary in nature, and puts them at a higher risk of danger. This isn’t a very common quirk type, as people tend to fall into one category or the other.
MUTANT Mutant quirks are defined as irregular physical conditions by which the user cannot disable or deactivate, and may or may not include additional attributes depending on the mutation, but because of the nature of their existence, they often wield the most control. Some mutant quirks have abilities inherent to that mutation that can be considered an emitter style quirk as well. Mutation quirks can also be an inconvenience to the individual, such as a rather large tail making it difficult to sleep or sit down. These are a middle ground in terms of frequency.

✧FORMS

MISSIONS

If something on the mission spreadsheet has caught your eye and you'd like to participate, please fill out the form under the top-level below.

HERO/VILLAIN REQUESTS

Being a villain in RP and keeping your motives secret can be tough, especially if you want to cause trouble on a wider scale. Infomodding can be an issue, so we're hoping this will be a good solution!
If you're a villain, please fill out the form below indicating your idea and how under the wraps you would like it to be. A mod will respond to you privately via your contact of preference to discuss the details. That's pretty much that!

We also understand that not every hero's action is brought into the limelight, and in an RP sense, we more or less mean we can't keep track of every thread. As we do provide a monthly newsletter, if there's a thread where your character's heroics are newsworthy or in general you feel are critical to other heroes to be aware of, please fill out the designated form below.

!! IMPORTANT ¡¡

ALL we ask is that if other individual players are included, get their permission to post this first. By that we mean don't drag someone into a plot they're not aware of being in. Villains and heroes can act 1-on-1; we don't need this form necessarily filled out. It's more meant for something where anyone can participate.
If we receive any correspondence that indicates you didn't ask, it's an immediate strike.

!! IMPORTANT ¡¡

Please include in the subject if this is a VILLAIN or HERO post.

OCCUPATIONS

  • Students

    • Hero Class—

      • Maybe you’ve had a pro that you’ve looked up to all your life. Maybe you want to do things for the greater good. Maybe you like being in the limelight or wish to earn a better living. Whatever your motivations, studying to become a hero is the way to go for you! As a student under the heroics program, you will be put under intense training to prepare you for a life of crime-fighting. You’ll be taught to improve the use of your quirks, how to compensate for your weaknesses, how to work alone and how to work with a team, but most importantly...you will be given the proper education needed to be a successful adult! Sorry kiddos, you’ve still gotta learn your maths and English.

    • Support Class—

      • You may not be the flashy one, but you do like to make a hero shine. As a support student you will be taught how to make or even invent your own gear that will assist heroes in controlling and maximizing their quirks. You will also be taught how to make their costumes. Every hero needs a costume! Just don’t get any weird ideas…

    • Business Class—

      • What? You think those heroes out there manage themselves? To be a real pro, quirks and skills need to be sold, and the business class learns how to do just that. A hero’s agency will never get to field any calls without a manager to promote their abilities and instill confidence into the state and communities, bringing them into the limelight where they otherwise might fall short. If you heroes want to earn those state dollars, learn to work with the business class.

    • General Education—

      • Sometimes you just don't qualify for any specific classes, but for the most part you're meeting UA standards so in you go. But fret not if you were gunning for the others! All you have to do is prove yourself, usually at the sports festival, to have your department reconsidered.

  • Teacher/Staff

    • Being a staff member doesn’t mean you’ll be behind a desk and in front of a board all day, don’t you worry. A lot of the staff of U.A are still active out in the field! If you have a knack for training up and coming heroes though, then you’ll be a great addition to the school! You’ll be training the students on combat, rescue, and other heroism skills and techniques. You will also be teaching regular classes as well! It is still a school, after all. Just make sure you plug your ears when walking by the English class. The teacher can be pretty, erm, loud.

  • Pro-Hero Agencies

    • You’ve graduated with a degree in heroism and have the license to kick ass! You either have your own agency or are part of one to help manage and promote your work. The cool thing about being a pro-hero, aside from being a hero, of course, is that there’s a variety of ways for you to save the day!

    • Crime Fighters—

      • You like to take the on the bad guys, ranging from purse snatchers to giants terrorizing the city, bringing justice with your fist! Or foot. Or tail. Or what have you. Just remember your agency will be charged for property damages so do your best!

    • Natural Disaster Responder—

      • Floods, forest fires, earthquakes and storms; someone’s gotta save people from mother nature’s wrath and your quirks are just right for the job! You’re likely going to be first on the scene, so remember people are counting on you!

    • Search & Rescue—

      • Your specialty may lie in a different kind of crisis or the aftermath of a disaster, finding those left beneath the debris and getting them out. When it comes to kidnapped children or helping a family out of a burning car, you’re the one they call! Consider yourself the second responder to the NDR team.

    • Support—

      • Keeping bystanders safe during an attack, dealing with fires or other dangers to the public during an incident—while this may sound more like background work, someone’s got to keep onlookers safe from falling building parts or cars being tossed during a hero-villain battle. You’d be surprised by how many civilians put themselves in harm’s way to get that selfie. Combat-type heroes can’t save everyone, but they can relax knowing they have fellow heroes to take care of the injured civilians and getting the rest of them to safety. Police officers often fall into this category, too.

    • Sidekick—

      • You’ve already gone through the academy, but you’re not quite there yet when it comes to experience and popularity. Working as a sidekick to a seasoned pro-hero will help get your name out there and give you the experience you need before you’re ready to stand on your own.

    • Manager—

      • Heroes depend on their popularity to be successful, and while they may be great at the heroics, they still need help with managing their work and their social media. You are the ones heroes rely on to help show the world that they are a hero to call upon when they need it. If they’re popular enough and have numerous gigs, someone needs to fix up their schedules while their busy saving the day.

  • Police

    • While criticized and made fun of by the public, heroes recognize the importance of the police and appreciate their expertise when it comes to investigating. Heroes need all the help they can get, and while their quirks may be great at fighting criminals, the police have the skill set needed to solve a crime and handle the paperwork needed to book them. They’re also there to protect the civilians alongside other support heroes, especially during a hero-villain fight on the streets.

  • Vigilante

    • Not everyone can get into UA or one of those expensive hero academies, you know. Certification exams are incredibly hard, or maybe you just suffer from extreme test anxiety, but you know where and when to be to stop a criminal in their path, no paper and pencil required. Perhaps you fall into the slim category of standing strong without a quirk, fearless in the face of power, but no matter which way you scratch it, you’re breaking the law. But for the greater good!! Really. It’s not like you’re getting paid for it...

  • Villains

    • Why use your powers to help people when you can help yourselves? Why limit yourself to what society tells you you should do with your powers when you’re capable of so much more? Feel like rebelling against the rules and knocking those snobby heroes down a peg or two? Then maybe the villain route is the way to go.

    • Petty Criminals—

      • You like to get in trouble but not THAT much trouble. Maybe pick a pocket or two or snatch a purse and run for the hills, but you gotta do what you gotta do during these hard times. Maybe you’ve never been caught before or you’re just not very good at getting away, but expect a hero to be on your tail in any case.

    • Organizations/Alliances—

      • You’ve heard rumors bubbling on the surface that an underground organization is rather tired of heroes spewing their sense of justice around when they resort to the same levels of violence as the criminals they face. Who are they to act so holier-than-thou when they run this altruistic show while getting paid for it? Who the Hell do they think they are?

    • Arch Nemesis—

      • You might be the source of a general amount of illegal activity, but your main goal is to draw out the hero you want to defeat the most and show them what they’re actually good for. Everyone else is a flea on the back of the top dog you want to take out—but you might also want to be sure you’re capable of taking on the hero you’re geared to destroy. Self-declarations of this title might warrant a laugh if you’re just being all bark and no bite.

    • Students—

      • No matter what way you look at it, being a hero feels less and less like an act of altruism and more like a method to line your wallet on the backs of troubled civilians. You’ve even overheard other students say they’re in it for the cash, the fame… But even so, perhaps you’ve always had that dark streak to you, and are getting rather tired of putting on a mask. What are you doing here again…?

LOCATIONS

Japan

This is the main country the game will be taking place in, but as a side note, don’t feel obligated to make your character from Japan. Do you know how many people are tourists, exchange students, or on work visas? Some of the most famous heroes are in Japan, though, so why not get your start there?

UA High School

UA is considered the most prestigious hero academy in Japan, warranting exchange students (Ages 15-18) and eyes from all over the world taking note of its longstanding history of producing top-tier heroes. Class 1-A in particular is often regarded as up and coming heroes, the group to keep your sights on, especially at the annual UA Sports Festival—the event that essentially replaced the Olympics!
UA has recently installed dormitories due to a string of villainous attacks to keep students protected on campus under the watchful eyes of the pros, but rumor has it there is a traitor in the midst…
But hey, UA! Why not enjoy what’s in front of you and leave the rest to the adults? Unless you are the adult… then get to work! What are you doing? Don’t you want to get paid?

Note: There are other schools and universities in general. Your character doesn't have to go to U.A.

Unforeseen Simulation Joint (USJ)

No, this isn’t the USJ you might be thinking of. If you’re really into being a hero, though, this place is way better than the amusement park, anyway! USJ is the optimal training grounds for new and veteran heroes alike, recreating disaster zones and different conditions to give junior and senior heroes a chance to engage in an environment they might otherwise have little access to. After all, quirks are quite amazing. You never know what conditions you’ll come across in the field.

Kiyashi Ward Shopping Mall (Wookiees)

Located in the Kiyashi Ward, the mall is the perfect place to go spend some time with your friends or shop for that beach trip you’re gearing up for this summer. Food, arcades, clothes, gift shops and more—! It’s incredibly crowded here, however, so if you’re not a fan of crowds, or perhaps your quirk makes it a little inconvenient to be in crowded places, you may want to reconsider or take precautions. You never know who you’ll run into, after all.

Residential Areas

These areas are typically less frantic and prone to crime than the lively cities, but that doesn’t stop homes from getting robbed and other nefarious deeds from taking place. You’ll mostly see children and families living in peace, or you’ll get those families that yell at each other every morning over menial things. No place like home!

Downtown Areas

The sights, the sounds, the food, the shopping, the incredible likelihood of witnessing a crime and a hero punching a villain into the sea—Downtown is quite the lively area! Businesses thrive here and skyscrapers glow with the blue skies and passing clouds over the city. Many hero agencies can be found in these areas, as crime is prevalent where people gather. It’s so easy to pick a pocket on a crowded train or snatch a purse and vanish in a crowd. Probably a little harder to kill a man, but why would you do something like that?

Transportation

Japan takes pride in its convenience… at least in the cities. You can expect trains to be your best modes for transportation, otherwise buses and cars are going to be your primary methods. Some UA students had to travel two hours a day by train just to get to school. Up hills in the snow—both ways! Thank goodness for the dorms, right?
Or you can be that person that can run at high speeds and transport yourself more efficiently with teleportation or some nonsense. Lucky you!
